British Society for Immunology
#ExploreVaccines with the British Society for Immunology and discover why vaccines are important for protecting us against serious diseases. Join the British Society for Immunology for interactive, hands-on activities suitable for all ages! Have fun and get creative while learning about how different bacteria and viruses interact with your immune system, how vaccines work and how herd immunity protects your community.
The British Society for Immunology represents scientists who study the immune system and we champion the importance of vaccines and provide reliable, evidence-based information to help everyone make informed decisions about vaccines and their health.
King’s Centre for Medical Engineering
At the Centre for Medical Engineering stand you can step into the shoes of King’s College London’s College scientists and researchers who are working on new healthcare technology including, surgical robotics, medical imaging, and 3D printing. See how they are designing and using imaging technology such as nuclear medicine scans to take a look inside the body.
Through creative and interactive activities, learn how radioactivity exists around us and how we can use it to take better images of our bodies, just like we are doing in our Mithras research programme. Get a closer look at what’s inside your body with 3D printed models of the heart, brain and more!
As part of our commitment to working with our local communities, we will also be joined by some of the community partners we have been working with in the local area.
The Centre for Medical Engineering is part of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences, King’s College London, where we are engineering better health for the world.
The Genetics Society
Welcome to the Genetics Society “It’s all in your genes!” stand where we will explore the wonders of genetics with our fantastic hands-on activities!
Have you ever wondered what makes you, you? Well, get ready to dive into the exciting world of DNA and discover the wonders of genetics. Did you know that an onion has five times more DNA than a human? It turns out, when it comes to our DNA, size doesn’t really matter. Explore what DNA is made of, how we can pack 2 metres of the stuff into a single cell and why DNA is to blame for you not liking broccoli.
Activities:
Colourful chromosomes – Visitors will make their own chromosome out of pipe cleaners and colourful beads. The colours of the beads chosen will link to physical attributes of the person making them; eye/hair colour, whether they can curl their tongue or not.
Are you a supertaster? – We will do a PTC test (simple strip of paper that the public will put on their tongues) to check for a genetic mutation. The strip has a taste to it if you have a certain mutation.
LEGACY Network
The Lymph nodE single-cell Genomics AnCestrY (LEGACY) Network brings together researchers from the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, and the Uganda Virus Research Institute to better understand and predict how cells in lymph nodes respond to vaccination in people with diverse ancestral backgrounds.
The project involves a study of 30 people. Participants donate cells from a blood test and a lymph node test before they receive the UK approved seasonal influenza vaccine, then donate samples again a few days after the vaccine. The fundamental aim for the LEGACY Network is to build a fuller picture of the immune system and its responses in a range of people of different backgrounds.
People with African, Asian and other diverse ancestries have previously been underrepresented in this kind of research. This will answer key questions in immunology, as well as accelerating vaccine discovery.
SiSTEM
SiSTEM is adding a hint of pink to the Lambeth country show & to science! SiSTEM is a community of women passionate about increasing awareness and interest about science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) whilst connecting women in STEM. There’s something for everyone at the SiSTEM stand whatever your age. Join in the fun with us whilst discovering the world of science around you or why not bring out your competitive side by taking on one of our challenges or treat yourself with SiSTEM merch.
SiSTEM is an initiative created by two sisters (Donna and Dr Abigail) in 2021 who aimed to provide community to women in STEM. Birthed from their own experiences, SiSTEM exists to support girls and women throughout their STEM journey and particularly show black women they have a space at the STEM table. We provide mentorship, volunteering opportunities, career advice through social media and events and workshops. We also collaborate with organisations to increase diversity and inclusion in STEM and expose to women to a range of STEM careers. The ultimate aim of the organisation is to change the narrative of women in STEM.
