Lambeth Sounds gives young people the chance to learn music in and out of school thanks to a partnership of high quality providers across the borough. School Ground Sounds
School Ground Sounds are a Brixton-based charity, empowering young people through music by developing skills and offering them real career opportunities. Watch a powerful cover of Tori Kelly’s ‘Hollow’ performed by Mia and Jide at Grit School 2019, a 7-week music industry crash course for young people from South London. The recording happened at Clapham Park Centre, home of Lambeth Music Service is available to watch here. |
Tomorrow's Warriors
If you’ve heard Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Binker Golding, Shabaka Hutchings or Ezra Collective play, you’ll know they are the best of new jazz. Tomorrow’s Warriors helped them and many more young artists discover their magic, nurture their talent and achieve their ambitions. Now, Moses, Nubya, Shabakah and others are helping out with ‘Summer Runnings’, two weeks of online masterclasses, chats and hangs, running from 17 to 28 August. SWeet! Recorders
SWeet! Recorders – Extraordinary Recorder for Extraordinary Kids SWeet! Recorder Consort do recorder music, differently. They play traditional Renaissance and Baroque music, but also jazz, rock, pop, rap and musical styles from across the world. Their professional recorder tuition is available to young people aged 8 to 18 years who live in or go to school in Lambeth. Watch and listen to them in action and see recorders like you never saw them before. |
Kinetika Bloco
Kinetika Bloco are an exuberant mix of young brass and woodwind players, drummers, steel pan and dynamic dancers who create a “unique new British Carnival sound with a decidedly London edge” according to BBC Radio. London Music Masters Big Friday Live
London Music Masters use music to positively affect the lives of children and young people in London’s inner-city schools. They’ve helped build the careers of young players helping them to become professional musicians. On Friday 3 July 2020 performers from six primary schools came together to celebrate their achievements. They showed what young people can do, given the chance. Watch the full concert or dip into highlights, including a special performance of We Are Family by the LMM teaching and staff team. |
Youthsayers
Youthsayers is a creative music opportunity, based at Raw Material in Brixton SW9 for young people living in Lambeth. It’s run by Brixton band Soothsayers with funding from the Arts Council England, Ronnie Scotts Charitable Foundation and UK Youth. Younger Youthsayers have been meeting online since lockdown began, but it hasn’t stopped them making music . Recorded on mobile phones in May, watch and hear their version of jazz legend Herbie Hancock’s classic, ‘Watermelon Man’ during #VirtualLCS. They even got an Instagram like from Herbie himself. |

Grooveschool are going live. Between 2 and 6pm on Saturday 18 July, they’re showcasing three young DJs from Lambeth mixing and performing sets: https://www.twitch.tv/gstvch2020 Check out some past performances here: https://hearthis.at/grooveschool/ Any young people interested in learning how to DJ, produce music or perform should join their DJ and Music Production workshops, which are running all summer. Email info@grooveschool.org to find out more. Boury Academy makes professional performing arts training available to all the young people of Lambeth. Their students have gone on to work in the West End, TV and film. They use music to build confidence and create community cohesion. During #VirtualLCS you can watch them performing two songs at a Gala event in 2019, where they worked with 25 stars of theatre and appeared on the West End stage. |
